The internet has created a new environment for pornography to exist and spread. Understanding the basics of the tools that are used to ensnare men, women, and children into porn addiction is a vital part of being able to create realistic boundaries and healing plans. Below you will find an infographic detailing a brief history of the internet. As you check it out, keep the ideas of connection, communication, and convergence in your mind.
Those who have pushed the internet forward in it’s application seem to be most interested in these three elements: communication, connection, and convergence.
Communication: the ability for everyone, everywhere to speak in a universal form that allows for all their technology to work together.
Connection: bringing all people together in a way that they can interact even beyond communication. This allows for incredible amounts of information sharing in locations and of all demographics.
Convergence: that technology and life would be completely intertwined. That the internet would act as a standardized piece of tech that brings your reality to life. The things you want to actualize are then done through this technology.
These priorities have created an environment with two powerful issues. First, is the issue that of what can be accessed. Pornography, and a huge swath of other despicable things, can be accessed on a whim. Imagine a library for your children that is wall to wall pornography, but has small sections of kids’ material in the middle. How long would you expect your children to be able to avoid it? Especially if they were alone! In the same way, we put an entire library of pornography in our children’s pockets when we hand them an unprotected cell phone or tablet. Without thinking about it, we have given the keys they need to become secretive and isolated from us and the world. Often, they even seem normal because everyone else is doing this as well. Access is a dreadfully dangerous thing.
The second is the issue of who can access you. The fact is advertising is one of the lagest industries in the word, raking in over 500 billion dollars a year. The internet’s primary revenue gneration source is the advertising and selling of personalized data. but this data is not just names and phone numbers. Instead, it’s information about preferences and behaviors, which sompanies use to strong arm you in to buying their products or becoing addicted to their services. Not the least of which is the porn industry.
In the end, the internet is a tool that we are not respecting. Entire industries are being rewarded for taking advantage of our desire for excitement and information access in order to create addictive templates that drive us back to them. take time today to consider how you will change the way you interact with the internet for the good of your family, children, and those whom you serve.
